Richard Cameron explores the future of broker revenue, market standards and how brokers can build long‑term value by blending upfront income with recurring revenue models

The broker–lender model continues to evolve, and with it comes new conversations about how brokers are compensated and how they structure their businesses for long‑term success. Richard Cameron, CEO of Close Brothers Broker Solutions, acknowledges that while traditional commission-based models remain essential, the industry is beginning to explore new approaches that could offer brokers more stability and long-term value.

“One of the biggest debates centres around whether brokers should receive income upfront or spread over the lifetime of an agreement. While some brokers are experimenting with this blended model, many still rely on upfront income to fund their staff, compliance, technology and operations. Transitioning to a recurring income model requires careful planning, especially if a broker plans to sell or pass on their business in future. An endowment-style revenue stream could increase the enterprise value of the brokerage, but it must be balanced against current operating costs.

“For customers, trust remains the cornerstone of financial decision-making. While AI and automation will help with in-life services and efficiency, human involvement will remain essential-particularly in helping SMEs make confident, well informed financial decisions."

“Regulation is another driver of change. With the FCA’s 2025–2030 strategy emphasising better customer outcomes and deeper trust in financial services, brokers are likely to face greater scrutiny. Close Brothers is working closely with organisations such as the NACFB and the FLA to help brokers stay ahead of these changes. The Broker Assurance Programme aims to streamline compliance and strengthen broker–lender relationships while demonstrating professionalism across the industry.

“For customers, trust remains the cornerstone of financial decision-making. While AI and automation will help with in-life services and efficiency, human involvement will remain essential-particularly in helping SMEs make confident, well‑informed financial decisions. Even as technology advances, brokers remain the bridge between the customer and the lender, offering guidance, reassurance and expertise.”

The next chapter of the broker market will be shaped by a blend of evolving revenue models, rising regulatory standards and advancing technology. Yet the heart of broking-human relationships-remains unchanged.
